Clinical Facilities
Based at Pentlands Science Park, Moredun Bioservices runs an integrated complex
incorporating purpose built farm animal accommodation, an operating theatre and
a post mortem suite with incineration facilities. An extensive high containment
facility is also available that provides optimal controlled environmental conditions
for large and small animal species and facilitates research on specified pathogens.
The unit is staffed by highly trained and dedicated individuals including experienced veterinarians, who provide animal care and maintenance to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCPv).
Over 3400mē of indoor large animal accommodation is available on site, providing an extensive range of housing options from conventional accommodation to semi-containment/semi-isolation accommodation. Pen sizes are highly adaptable with individual or group housing as required.
The high containment facility provides 70mē of accommodation
in eight positive pressure rooms, and three negative pressure suites provide
30mē of up to Category
3 containment accommodation. The individual rooms are adaptable to individual
penning or group housing for farm animal species. Flexible film isolators
can also be used to house gnotobiotic animals.
The small animal unit consists of nineteen rooms for non-infectious studies with an additional fourteen HEPA filtered negative pressure rooms providing Category 2 containment accommodation. Necropsy and procedure rooms are incorporated on each level.
Moredun Bioservices maintains a high quality disease free flock of 500 breeding Blackface ewes on its two farms which have over 100 hectares of grazing, providing lambs at various times of year. Other species of defined health status can be sourced as required from specially selected suppliers. Specific pathogen free and gnotobiotic animals are delivered surgically on site and maintained under appropriate conditions.
